There’s nothing like being stuck inside…

Standard

…to make you appreciate the beauty outside.

I took this photo of Mount Vesuvius on an evening stroll to a pizzeria in Italy last year. Almost as lovely as the view is the subtle way light hits the fence in the foreground. It’s the little things that make life so special.

If the upside to holidaying on a mountain was the vista, the downside was driving on terrifyingly narrow roads inches from a sheer drop!

Still, I survived to tell the tale, and even wrote a poem about it:

Driving in Campania

Roundabouts resemble seaside dodgems –
enter at your own risk.
Three locals ride one scooter, weaving
confident and brisk.

Hairpin bending
Edge descending.

Shrine reminding
Via winding.

Magnificence holds terror
firmly strapped inside.
A self-propelling roller-coaster
eyes you cannot hide.

Molto narrow
Molto high.
Molto mountains
Molto sky.

A Roman serpent slithers
to the Tyrrhenian Sea
From the summit of Mount Faito –
on its back it carries me.
